Wilderness First Aid Training

Two-day Wilderness First Aid training

As part of our continued pursuit of education, Outdoor Bound is very proud to sponsor the two-day Wilderness First Aid course.

This two-day medical course has no prerequisites and the certification is good for three years. It is the perfect course for those who enjoy extended and remote hiking, guiding, counseling, summer camp work, kayaking, or traveling in remote areas.

The Wilderness First Aid curriculum uses the principles of long-term care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for learning. The course was first developed and taught by SOLO in the mid-1980’s. Created to provide outdoor leaders, guides, and rangers with the knowledge needed to deal with crises in remote settings, the class meets DOT National Standards for First Aid with additional protocols for extended-care situations. The emphasis of the Wilderness First Aid is on prevention and decision-making.

The WFA addresses the issues of medicolegal concerns, blood-born pathogens and infectious diseases. The Patient Assessment System, the foundation of the course, trains students to determine what is going on with backcountry patients. Other sessions provide instruction in traumatic situations as well as medical emergencies. Environmental issues such as hypothermia and heat injuries are dealt with in great detail. Practical simulations and labs provide practice in backcountry leadership and rescue skills. When you have successfully completed this course you will have the knowledge and confidence to assess and treat everything from a sprained ankle or allergic reaction to a dislocated shoulder or spinal injury.

About WFA Certification

Students who successfully complete the SOLO Wilderness First Aid course will receive a SOLO Wilderness First Aid card and an American Heart Association Adult Heartsaver CPR card (or equivalent).

Certification is based on successful completion of the course. In order to do so, all certification candidates are required to participate in 100% of the course, as that is the best way to assess mastery of the skills involved. Instructors provide ongoing feedback and many opportunities for questions. Final assessment of each student’s skills includes written and practical exams.

New Experiences

Skydiving, ice-climbing, hot-air ballooning, skiing and hiking every weekend are just a few of Outdoor Bound’s year-round adventures. These trips are accessible to everyone, including the novice, who might feel a little uneasy, the young urban professional trying to get away and even the adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush.

Environmental Awareness

“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures,” is the Leave No Trace motto embraced by Outdoor Bound. From purchasing bamboo T-shirts to printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper, Outdoor Bound strives to create the least environmental impact possible while on trips and in the office.

Testimonials

The weekend was awesome! The hike was great - lots of scrambling which is so much fun. And canyoneering was just ridiculous. I was definitely terrified at first and had no idea what to expect, but by the end I wanted to do more! It was so difficult going to work today and sitting in an office after a great weekend outdoors.
