Wawayanda Adventure Race Challenge

A thrilling adventure race in beautiful Wawayanda State Park

Think you have what it takes to compete in an adventure race? Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned athlete, this course is designed to test you physically and mentally. This race is dirty, exhilarating and downright fun. Brought to you by Genesis Adventures and Outdoor Bound, this race will feature two-person teams for trail running, mountain biking, and kayaking. On race day, you will be given a map and instructions. The rest is up to you! You and your teammate will determine the best course and sequence, whether running, biking or kayaking. Outdoor Bound staff will be on hand throughout the day to help and answer questions. If you do not have a race partner, you may sign up as an individual and take the adventure to another level! On race day, we will pair you with another individual racer. Note this is a two-person team race so you will need a partner.

Competitive or Casual

This is a new format for 2010 that should appeal to beginner and experienced racers alike. You may choose between a casual course that is slightly shorter and requiring less orienteering skills, or you may compete in the competitive course. There will be awards given for each category, competitive and casual.

Signing up solo?

If you want to sign up as an individual, that’s OK! We will do our best to pair you with another solo racer. Again, this is a two-person team event, so everyone will need a partner. Should there be an odd number of solo participants, you could be paired with an Outdoor Bound guide. If you want us to pair you with another racer, please write “need partner” in the comment field when you register.

About the Race

Trail Running

Novices will follow a marked trail running course of four to six miles. Experienced racers will follow the same route and be required to locate additional checkpoints in the woods off the trail. Racers should have a good pair of running shoes and take along their own hydration.

Mountain Biking

Novices will follow a marked trail of eight to ten miles. You can expect some technical terrain and we definitely recommend a mountain bike with wide tires and front shocks.  Experienced racer will also follow this route and be required to locate additional checkpoints in the woods off the trail. Racers should also carry a water bottle with them during the biking section.

Kayaking

Each team will receive a two-person sit-on-top kayak and paddles. You will receive instructions on how to navigate your way around the lake to find certain checkpoints. The kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle even if you have never tried before. Experienced racers are welcome to bring their own paddles.

Casual or Competitive

Not sure if you should be in the casual or competitive race? The major difference is being able to use a map and compass effectively. During the race you will need to develop a strategy with your teammate, which will include navigational skills. You are welcome to try either course.

Testimonials

Outdoor Bound makes everything so easy. You show up, hop in the van, and off you go! They somehow have struck the perfect balance between being totally laid-back and completely organized all at the same time. I wish we could do this every weekend. — Maura
