Mount Tammany Hike
Challenging 8-Mile Hike: Raptors, Ridges and the Appalachian Trail!
Head to the Delaware Water Gap for a rigorous hike and fantastic views. For 40 miles the Middle Delaware River passes between low forested mountains with barely a house in sight. Then the river cuts through the mountain ridge to form the famed “Water Gap.” Today, you will hike eight miles along the Appalachian Trail over Raccoon Ridge to the peak of Mount Tammany and finishing along the banks of Sunfish Pond.
Birds of prey use the thermals that rise along the northeast mountain ridges to migrate south every year. Raccoon Ridge along the Delaware Water Gap has one of the largest counts of migrating raptors every year. Watch carefully for the over 15,000 birds that will migrate through the Gap between September and December.
Ascend Mount Tammany, located 1,549 feet above sea level and a 1,200-foot climb from the bottom of the Delaware River Valley. From a rocky outcropping on top of a cliff, marvel at the outstanding views of the Delaware Water Gap, while you stop for a picnic lunch.
Hiking farther along the loop, we will see a glacial lake, Sunfish Pond, nestled along the Kittatiny Ridge with boulders along its shoreline. The pond is so deep local tradition claims that it has no bottom.
