Meteor Shower Winter Night Hike or Snowshoeing

Crisp winter stillness broken only by meteors streaking the night sky. Magical night hike!

Skip the bar this Saturday night and do something truly unique: a winter night hike during a meteor shower! In the moonlight, the woods take on a mysterious beauty. This night, the first quarter moon will set by midnight, then it’s nature’s light show.

On this nighttime adventure in the woods, let your eyes adjust to the darkness around you as the rustling wind whips through the trees. Brave the moonlit path or flick on your headlamp to explore the wilderness after dark.

We will take a moderate 5.5-mile hike to a rocky mountaintop, then down to a beautiful lake. Here we will make a toasty fire and roast marshmallows. If there is enough snow, we will snowshoe. (Snowshoes provided.)

After midnight, the real show begins! The Quadrantids are an above-average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower will peak this year the weekend of January 3. Our woodsy location provides a great opportunity for viewing. We’ll look for meteors radiating from the constellation Boötes.

You’ll return along desolate, possibly snowy trails, and arrive in Manhattan with eyes aglow from your winter nighttime adventure.

Testimonials

Today’s hike was the best — and most challenging — I’ve ever been on. My feet have blisters, my back hurts, every muscle in my body aches, and I’ve consumed four liters of water. But I had a great time! I was impressed with Richard’s leadership and professionalism and I quite liked everyone on the hike. Looking forward to joining you again. — Eric
