Lecture Series: We Make the Maps

How do they make the maps?

It’s a fascinating topic and one that has always intrigued us as guides. How in the world do they make topographic maps and do it with amazing accuracy? For this event, we have partnered with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and brought in the map experts to discuss the secrets of map making. Dan Chazin author of “Hike of the Week” and Jeremy Apgar, the Trail Conference’s official cartographer, will discuss how maps are created. They will show how mapmaking has changed, from the old analog method to the new digital GPS methods, and how each method depends on volunteers and people in the field.

The Presenters

Jeremy Apgar

Jeremy has been the cartographer and GIS specialist for the NY-NJ Trail Conference since 2007 and has produced a variety of maps for the organization, including published hiking maps of the NY-NJ area as well as maps to aid in trail building efforts and open space acquisition. A New Jersey native who fell in love with the outdoors while growing up in the northwestern part of the state, Jeremy enjoys being able to help enhance the experiences of other hikers by providing great trail maps.

Dan Chazin

Daniel Chazin has been an active volunteer for the Trail Conference since 1982. He currently serves as Board Secretary and Chair of the Publications Committee. For the past eight years, he has written a hiking column for The Record of Bergen County, New Jersey which currently appears every other Thursday in the Better Living section of the newspaper. In addition to his work on Trail Conference maps, Daniel serves as editor of the New York and New Jersey Walk Books and is currently working on a revised and updated edition of Bill Myles’ guidebook Harriman Trails: A Guide and History.

Why Outdoor Bound?

Experienced, Fun & Qualified Guides

From cycling across the United States to leading horse treks through New Zealand to scaling Nepalese peaks, Outdoor Bound guides have real-world outdoor experience. Collectively, they have hiked, biked, climbed and kayaked tens of thousands of miles around the globe.

Whether their professional backgrounds are as teachers, personal trainers, artists, environmentalists or business leaders, they all have an extensive knowledge of the natural world and local history. Each guide has also passed a rigorous guide certification program and is trained in wilderness first aid or as a Wilderness First Responder.

Diverse & Interesting Groups

There is no typical Outdoor Bound participant. While ages typically range from 20 to 50, those who come to experience outdoor adventure range from singles to couples, from lawyers to waiters. They are a mix of women and men. While the group is always diverse, you will certainly feel welcome. Our guides go the extra mile to make the atmosphere of each trip social and fun. Many people in the Outdoor Bound community have forged lasting friendships as a result of our trips.

New Experiences

Skydiving, ice-climbing, hot-air ballooning, skiing and hiking every weekend are just a few of Outdoor Bound’s year-round adventures. These trips are accessible to everyone, including the novice, who might feel a little uneasy, the young urban professional trying to get away and even the adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush.

Environmental Awareness

“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures,” is the Leave No Trace motto embraced by Outdoor Bound. From purchasing bamboo T-shirts to printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper, Outdoor Bound strives to create the least environmental impact possible while on trips and in the office.

Testimonials

The Canopus Lake hike was beyond unbelievable. The exercise was wonderful and the views were breathtaking. Great hike for moderately fit first timers. This was my first hike and it was the perfect way to get into it. — Jane
