Adventure Tri Clinic
Mountain Bike, Kayak and Trail Run with more confidence!
Learn to mountain bike, kayak and trail run with more confidence, while getting a great workout, seeing stunning parts of Long Island and having a good time. We’ll meet at Stillwell Woods Preserve at 9am, leave our bikes and biking gear, and get transported to Cold Spring Harbor where the kayak portion of our tri will take place. After receiving instruction on proper technique, we’ll paddle out around a buoy while professional kayak guides paddle alongside offering assistance throughout the 40-minute picturesque course. Trail running follows on the scenic Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt. With 2,200 feet of elevation change, this rugged 4-mile section is arguably one of the most challenging trails in all of Long Island and the surrounding area. During the run, we’ll discuss proper shoe selection, running technique, sports nutrition, injury prevention and orienteering as we make our way to Stillwell Woods Preserve where our bikes and gear will be waiting. Once transitioned from running to bike gear, we’ll split up if necessary so that each athlete can ride a trail that is appropriate for his/her level of experience. During the 4-mile mountain biking portion, we’ll demonstrate proper riding techniques for a variety of trail features and discuss riding position, gearing, braking, bike mechanics, trail etiquette and equipment choices. We’ll meet you at the train station and warm up with a short road ride to Stillwell Preserve. After the clinic, it’s a short ride back to the train station (for the 1:47pm returning to Penn at 2:39pm) or spend some time in quaint Cold Spring Harbor or bustling Huntington, both of which have nearby train stations. Don’t forget your bike pass that can be purchased for $5 (good indefinitely) at stations, on board trains and by mail. After crossing the finish line at around 12:30, we’ll cool down, stretch out with a few yoga poses and have some well deserved refreshments. Beverages and snacks will be provided at aid stations on the course.
