Itinerary

Friday > Arrive in Pennsylvania

labor day multi sport weekend camp ligonier outdoor

Begin to reconnect with nature as you drive away from the city and through the forested, rolling hills of Pennsylvania. We’ll stop for a quick dinner along the way before we arrive in the beautiful Laural Highlands of Western Pennsylvania - a place where time seems to move slower.

A winding gravel road weaves through the trees and cloaked within the Pennsylvania forests, a cabin sits on the side of a mountain. We’ll arrive at a large cabin late tonight for a good night’s sleep to prepare for a weekend of adventure. You’ll fall asleep listening to the wind rustling through the trees and crickets chirping in the woods behind the cabin.

Saturday > Low/High Ropes and Bonfire!

Watch the sunrise and inhale the scents of dewy leaves and fresh soil wafting through the early morning air as you prepare for a full day ahead. We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast of homemade waffles and fresh fruit in the mountain lodge before embarking on our first activity.

First Up: challenge your mind and body, while relying on your teammates, as you climb through a challenging selection of the 17 initiative elements on the low ropes course. Initiatives are a series of team building, goal-oriented activities that focus on a combination of mental and physical skills to accomplish a common objective. After building trust within the group, we’ll eat a quick lunch, then ascend into the treetops to work our way through more than 20 high ropes elements. Test your limits as you carefully cross the high wire, clamber up the pamper pole and leap from the narrow top to grab a trapeze suspended from the canopy!

After dinner, we’ll take a short hike through the property for a bonfire overlooking the rolling hills and farmland of the Laurel Mountains. Roast marshmallows for s’mores in the cool Pennsylvania night air as the last of the summer fireflies light up the forests.

Sunday > Mountain Biking, Caving and Beer!

After breakfast, begin your morning jumping logs, crossing bridges and boardwalks, and riding a seesaw—all while pedaling a mountain bike! This unique mountain biking course contains numerous technical obstacles ranging from stumpfields and log piles to ramps and seesaws. Challenging for most riders, but experienced instructors will help the novice mountain biker successfully complete the course. Beyond the course you will find over 500 more acres to explore.
Next, strap yourself into a mountain board (imagine a snowboard with heavy duty wheels) and cruise around switchbacks, sail over jumps and maneuver through obstacles as you wind down the mountain.

Before lunch, stretch your arms and legs as you search for the perfect hold while scaling one of the four 50-foot climbing walls or exploring the bouldering walls inside the tower.

This afternoon, we’ll take a short hike to the mouth of Falling Creek Cave. Shimmy through the opening on your stomach until the cave opens up into haunting caverns filled with small stalactites, stalagmites, and other crystalline rock formations sculpted by thousands of years of water flowing and dripping throughout the cave. Hunt for your team members in a pitch-black game of hide-and-go-seek or explore the many crevasses and rocky folds throughout the cave lit by your headlamp. To exit the cave, you’ll squeeze through a small vertical tunnel, lovingly referred to as the “Birth Canal,” and emerge back into the daylight.

After we hike back to the cabin, you’ll have a chance to wash the layers of dirt from your clothes and your body, rest, and explore the wooded property before we head to town for dinner at The Hollow Tavern. After two challenging days, sit back and sip a cold beer in the sunroom balcony overlooking the gently flowing Loyalhanna River.

Monday > Zip-line and Home

Take a minute this morning, while still curled up in bed, to let your senses take in all the natural wonders around you on your last day in Pennsylvania. Listen to the birds singing as they forage for food, watch sunlight play across your body as it filters through leaves fluttering in the early morning breeze, and breath in the cool, crisp, clean mountain air as you stretch and rise for a brand new day.

Then prepare yourself, this morning we’ll strap you into a harness, hoist you 50 feet in the air at the edge of a wooded hillside and, when you’re ready, yank the quick release cord. Feel the air rush past your entire body as a giant swing catapults back and forth to heights of almost 100 feet through the trees! Continue to test your wings on the high-adrenaline rope element, the Flying Squirrel. Finish the course by flying 1,000 linear feet high above the ground attached to one of the longest zip lines in the Northeast, before we grab lunch at the lodge and settle into the van to head back to New York City.

These trips are accessible to everyone, including the novice, who might feel a little uneasy, the young urban professional trying to get away and even the adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush.

Environmental Awareness

“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures,” is the Leave No Trace motto embraced by Outdoor Bound. From purchasing bamboo T-shirts to printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper, Outdoor Bound strives to create the least environmental impact possible while on trips and in the office.
