Hudson River Sunset Sea Kayaking Intro & Pub
Paddle & Pub! Two-hour Introduction to Hudson River Sea Kayaking and First Drink Free at the Frying Pan!
This is MUCH more than the freebie paddle-around-the-pilings on Saturday. This is real sea kayaking!
Manhattan Kayak, the New York City region’s premier full service sea kayaking guiding and instruction company offers a one of a kind introductory open water paddling workshop designed exclusively for Outdoor Bound. With fast moving current, dynamic hydraulic conditions, unique sites and history, the Hudson river estuary is truly a world class sea kayaking resource providing an unlimited amount of on water fun.
To meet the challenges of this area and turn active minded individuals of all ages on to the joys of “Gotham paddling” Manhattan Kayak has pioneered full body kayaking with an emphasis on effective technique and safety. With more than a decade of success, Manhattan Kayak is now excited to partner with Outdoor Bound in a continued effort to get busy New Yorkers out on the water to check out the exhilarating and relaxing experience of HUMAN POWERED boating around Manhattan Island.
Instruction & Safety
Instruction is the cornerstone of Manhattan Kayak Company; they produces good paddlers. We are proud to say we paddle on an intermediate body of water. The Hudson River offers strong currents, wind & waves and a very busy waterway. Our focus is based on incorporating the entire body in your paddling. Using the “core” to generate power and utilizing the lower body for extra control and strength yields good boat handling skills and a strong forward stroke.
The two hour evening workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to sea kayaking. Set on Pier 63 home of the “Frying Pan” and the historic “John J. Harvey” fire boat with the New York city skyline as a backdrop the session will include dry-land instruction and team building, outfitting and safety procedures and culminate with a social “Sunset” on-water tour.
You need to feel comfortable in the water, and be able to swim. Good core strength and endurance are required; if you can do 20 pushups or if you do yoga or Pilates regularly, you will be fine. You must be taller than 4’10” to participate.
Headlamp is required—we are heading into sunset.
First Beer Free at the Frying Pan!
After paddling, participants can head to the open air bar/restaurant on All gear is provided (kayaks, PFD’s/life jackets, paddles and spray skirts).
Kayaks will be sit-on-top sea kayaks which are very stable, or classic “sit inside” decked kayaks with spray skirt (more experienced kayakers).
There is a place to change clothes and lockers, if you are coming straight from work!
Not sure about the kayaking? Join us for the pub-n-grub at 8:00pm!

Experienced, Fun & Qualified Guides
From cycling across the United States to leading horse treks through New Zealand to scaling Nepalese peaks, Outdoor Bound guides have real-world outdoor experience. Collectively, they have hiked, biked, climbed and kayaked tens of thousands of miles around the globe.
Whether their professional backgrounds are as teachers, personal trainers, artists, environmentalists or business leaders, they all have an extensive knowledge of the natural world and local history. Each guide has also passed a rigorous guide certification program and is trained in wilderness first aid or as a Wilderness First Responder.
Diverse & Interesting Groups
There is no typical Outdoor Bound participant. While ages typically range from 20 to 50, those who come to experience outdoor adventure range from singles to couples, from lawyers to waiters. They are a mix of women and men. While the group is always diverse, you will certainly feel welcome. Our guides go the extra mile to make the atmosphere of each trip social and fun. Many people in the Outdoor Bound community have forged lasting friendships as a result of our trips.
New Experiences
Skydiving, ice-climbing, hot-air ballooning, skiing and hiking every weekend are just a few of Outdoor Bound’s year-round adventures. These trips are accessible to everyone, including the novice, who might feel a little uneasy, the young urban professional trying to get away and even the adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush.
Environmental Awareness
“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures,” is the Leave No Trace motto embraced by Outdoor Bound. From purchasing bamboo T-shirts to printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper, Outdoor Bound strives to create the least environmental impact possible while on trips and in the office.
