Day Trips
Canoeing, Camping & Hiking in the Adirondacks

Image

Stillwater serenity in the amazing Adirondack Mountains!

Prepare to paddle through paradise… In this three-day, two-night expedition you will canoe, hike and portage through the only designated canoe area in the Northeast.

Completely devoid of all motorized boats, vehicles and even air-traffic, the St. Regis Wilderness is a rare gem to behold.

However peaceful this environment may be, the trip is not for the faint of heart! Throughout the weekend, you will traverse the famous “Route of the Seven Carries,” a series of beautiful lakes and ponds connected by short carries or “portages” with all of your equipment- canoes included! No experience is necessary to learn the art of paddling safely and efficiently with the expertise of your ODB guide, but you do need to be in good shape and have good stamina.

Additionally, this trip includes a hike to the stunning summit of St. Regis Mountain to take in the views from above. At night, prepare to camp under the stars, tell jokes by the campfire and fall asleep to the call of the loons.

What’s Included

Camping
Camping in the hearth of the Adirondack Wilderness! Bring your own tent, or rent one from us. You will need your own sleeping bag and pad.

Your home for the weekend will be a primitive base camp on a very small, picturesque and remote lake. While specific campsites vary, most do not provide any traditional amenities (such as showers, toilets, beds, etc.). You will quickly become skilled at primitive camping and the surprising luxuries you can create without standard amenities.

Meals
Bring money for road lunch on Friday and Dinner on Sunday. All other meals are included.

Please see the Pack List tab above for what to bring.

Itinerary

Friday, August 14 > Departure, Canoe instruction and Camping

Image

Departing New York City Friday morning, we will head into the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, the largest wilderness area in New York. Along the way, we will stop for lunch and bathroom breaks. Upon arrival, we will outfit ourselves, rig the vessels and hit the water for our first canoe lesson. This afternoon, we will paddle 5 miles through and portage twice before making camp for the weekend.

Saturday, August 15 > Paddling and Portage

Image

After a hearty breakfast, we will pack a small bag and leave camp for the day- with empty canoes this time. A short paddle will take us to the start of St. Regis Mountain. The path follows a short but steep route that brings us to the 2,874-foot summit, from where you can see some 30 lakes and ponds and countless mountain peaks. Once our photo-op has been deemed satisfactory, we will then descend back to our canoes and explore the surrounding waters. Activities for the afternoon include further canoe instruction, swimming, sunbathing, boat games, learning loon calls and snacking. Tonight you can relax around the campfire while your guides prepare your gourmet backcountry meal.

Sunday, August 16 > Paddling and Return to Civilization

Image

Today we break camp and slowly make our way back to civilization. Even through it is our last day, we have plenty to see and some newly acquired paddling skills to put to the test. Our voyage snakes its way through the calm and protected waters of Bear, Little Long, Green and St. Regis lakes–all before landing at little clear pond and our take out for the trip. Once disembarked, we will de-rig our canoes, return our gear and head back to NYC by 8:00pm.
