Backwoods Snowshoeing
We Go Where the Snow Is!
Beginners are welcome! Snowshoeing is easy to learn — if you can hike, you can snowshoe. Outdoor Bound bought our own snowshoes this year! This means we are not limited to the local ski facilities—we can go where the snow is. Our drive will be approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Manhattan. Note If there is insufficient snow, this trip will convert to an eight-mile winter hike, intermediate level.
What Are the Benefits of Snowshoeing?
Snowshoeing is a great workout. At moderate speeds, you will burn between 400 – 500 calories per hour. It tones your entire body while providing an excellent cardiovascular workout. It strengthens leg and heart muscles and improves delivery of oxygen to all muscles.
Snowshoeing is a great way to stay healthy during the winter! Snowshoes are highly maneuverable, allowing you to go places where cross-country skiers and snowmobilers cannot go. You can easily travel through thickly-wooded and steep terrain. When you explore the woods via snowshoes, you will experience the astounding quiet and serenity of a snow-covered landscape.

Event Details
- Departure time 7:30 AM
- Return time Approximately 6:30 PM
- Departure/Return Location Our passenger vans depart from the NE corner of 73rd Street and Broadway — meet in front of Apple Bank (Subways to 72nd Street: 1,2,3).
- Includes Snowshoe rental, group lesson, trail fees, transportation in our passenger van, hot cocoa
- Snowshoe Location Wherever has the best snow!
- Wear Ski gear — nylon outer shell (aka, ski pants and jacket), warm layers — you will need to peel off a layer as you heat up! Waterproof/snowproof boots (i.e., Gore Tex lined) Hat, gloves, scarf. Packs of handwarmers from the drugstore are a good idea too!
- Bring Lunch, snacks and 2 liters of water in a backpack (you will lose a lot of fluids sweating and it is important to stay hydrated!) A thermos of hot soup, coffee or tea is also a great idea. Remember: caffeinated beverages will not only dehydrate you and make you urinate more, but caffeine is also a vasoconstrictor, which means it will close off the tiny blood vessels that deliver heat to your extremities.

Experienced, Fun & Qualified Guides
From cycling across the United States to leading horse treks through New Zealand to scaling Nepalese peaks, Outdoor Bound guides have real-world outdoor experience. Collectively, they have hiked, biked, climbed and kayaked tens of thousands of miles around the globe.
Whether their professional backgrounds are as teachers, personal trainers, artists, environmentalists or business leaders, they all have an extensive knowledge of the natural world and local history. Each guide has also passed a rigorous guide certification program and is trained in wilderness first aid or as a Wilderness First Responder.
Diverse & Interesting Groups
There is no typical Outdoor Bound participant. While ages typically range from 20 to 50, those who come to experience outdoor adventure range from singles to couples, from lawyers to waiters. They are a mix of women and men. While the group is always diverse, you will certainly feel welcome. Our guides go the extra mile to make the atmosphere of each trip social and fun. Many people in the Outdoor Bound community have forged lasting friendships as a result of our trips.
New Experiences
Skydiving, ice-climbing, hot-air ballooning, skiing and hiking every weekend are just a few of Outdoor Bound’s year-round adventures. These trips are accessible to everyone, including the novice, who might feel a little uneasy, the young urban professional trying to get away and even the adrenaline junkie looking for a new rush.

“Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures,” is the Leave No Trace motto embraced by Outdoor Bound. From purchasing bamboo T-shirts to printing with soy-based inks on recycled paper, Outdoor Bound strives to create the least environmental impact possible while on trips and in the office.

We closely monitor snow, ice and related weather conditions before each trip. Lack of snow or similar, unsatisfactory weather/trail/river conditions may lead to changes to the trip or rescheduling or cancellation.
