Snow Shoeing, Cross Country Skiing & Mountaineering

Join us for a weekend of snowshoeing, cross country skiing and winter mountaineering in the Adirondacks!

Hiking the Adirondack High Peaks in the winter is an experience unlike any other. Learn from our experienced guides the basic skills of winter mountaineering. We will be snowshoeing into the backcountry as we will attempt to summit one of the 46 high peaks in this region. This day trip is a great way for seasoned hikers to learn how to deal with the added elements that are presented in winter. This challenging hike will ascend around 3,000 feet above the treeline to amazing views of white-capped mountains. If Nordic is your style, spend a day cross country skiing in the pristine setting of the Adirondack Mountains.

Your evenings will be spent relaxing in the beautiful Adirondack Loj, warming your toes by the fire and telling stories of your winter expeditions. Home-cooked meals with fresh-baked bread and delicious soups will be served to you. After a full day in the snow-covered mountains, you will find there is no place in the world you would rather be.

Adirondack Loj

Our accommodations will be at the rustic and beautiful Adirondak Loj, built in 1927. In 1890, Henry Van Hoevenberg opened the original Adirondack Lodge. From its location on the shore of Heart Lake, he built trails up the surrounding High Peaks where he led, taught, and encouraged the earliest hikers. More than a hundred years later you can still enjoy those same traditions of mountain hospitality, recreation, and education.

We will settle into our bunkhouse, located just five miles south of Lake Placid, New York, as close as you can get to the East’s largest wilderness. Enjoy delicious home-cooked meals with homemade breads and soups in the rustic dining room. The living room with its stone fireplace is perfect for recounting the day’s adventures or just relaxing with a book from the Loj library.

Itinerary

Friday > Drive into the Adirondack Mountains

Image

We depart New York City on Friday afternoon and drive into the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, the largest wilderness area in New York. Along the way, we will stop for dinner and bathroom breaks. Dinner will be on the road and out of pocket. Tonight, we will get a good night’s sleep at the Adirondack Loj, resting up for a full day in the snowy mountains.

Adirondack State Park

A thin blue line on the map separates the Adirondacks from the world of madcap development. The park covers six million acres—an area larger than the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite combined. It is roughly the same size as the state of Vermont to the east. Adirondack State Park covers a fifth of New York State. Two thousand peaks lie within its folds, and a hundred are taller than 3,000 feet. Two peaks, Marcy and Algonquin, stand higher than 5,000 feet. Nearly half of the park is forest preserve, land set aside to remain in its natural state.

Saturday > Snowshoe the High Peaks or Cross Country Ski

Image

Eat up this morning, for you will have a full day in the snow-packed mountains. After a hearty and scrumptious breakfast, you will have the option of snowshoeing a High Peak summit or spend the day on skis, traversing through the Lake Placid Olympic Center.

Snowshoers will learn the basics of winter mountaineering from our experienced guides. This challenging hike will ascend around 3,000 feet along the tree line in an attempt to summit one of the 46 peaks in this region. With snowshoes provided by Outdoor Bound, you will navigate the beautiful trails, rising to elevations that provide stunning views of the High Peaks region.

Cross-country skiers will explore the trails used during the 1980 Olympic Games, one of the best Nordic experiences in all of North America. With over 31 miles of trails, you can ski all day without hitting the same trail twice. Our seasoned guides will train you on proper technique so you can make the most of your day. Between runs, warm up at the lodge with a cup of hot cocoa.

Tonight, settle in by the roaring fire with your friends. You will find one of life’s greatest sensations comes from a full belly and fatigued legs.

Sunday > Olympic Village

Image

Live like an olympian today! After our final meal in the Loj, we will explore charming Lake Placid and the Olympic Village. You can bobsled down the 1980 Winter Games track or ice skate on the outdoor oval. If you feel like taking it easy, today is yours to stroll through downtown, enjoying the sights and shops of Lake Placid. Lunch today is in town, and out of pocket.

Optional Activities

  • Ice Skating $10
  • Bobsledding $75

Olympic History

Lake Placid is best known as the two-time site of the Winter Olympics, in 1932 and 1980. In the United States, the village is especially remembered as the site of the 1980 USA-USSR hockey game, the “Miracle on Ice,” when a group of American college students and amateurs upset the heavily favored Soviet national ice hockey team 4-3 and two days later won the gold medal. The victory is often ranked as the greatest in American sports history. It is also the site of the Olympic Oval, where Eric Heiden won his five Olympic gold medals.
